Holyport 2 v Pinner Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 05 May 2018 at 13.00
Pinner Cricket Club Lost by 2 runs

Match report Pinner 2's kicked off their 2018 league campaign with a hard fought and close game against Holyport, ultimately losing by just two runs.

After making the long journey Skips won the toss. The decision was relatively easy as the track looked like a damp, early season wicket, with an outfield that was extremely slow.

Opening the bowling Dan Downer (3-26) and 'Onion' Shaji Thomas (3-26) bowled extremely tightly, aided by keen fielding from the Lambs. As usual the Holyport skipper Edwards was difficult to remove, making a steady 31 after giving a chance before he scored. New played Krishnan Radhakrishnan came on as first change and after a shaky start produced some excellent deliveries without finding the edge of the bat. Recognising that this was the first game of the season bowlers were given short spells and rotated after 5 or 6 overs which seemed to work as both Shaji and Dan came back with wicket taking second spells. Skips (3-28) bowled from one end, with the exception for a one over blast before drinks from Simon Pilsbury (1-5). Continued good fielding and tight bowling meant that Holyport were restricted to 130 all out off 45 overs, a score that many thought was par for the course.

After an excellent tea that also included ice lollies(!) Pinner set about chasing. To say we got off to a slow start is an understatement, with runs barely keeping up with overs (17-3 off 15 overs!) but a diligent Robert Fells (16) and Cyrus Barrett (28) took the score to 44 at drinks, still a long way off. Enter Kieron Carter (24), who started by playing extremely watchfully before hitting some lusty blows and bringing the run rate up. When he fell Pinner were 81-6, still 49 runs from their target but Skips (19*) and the tail, allied with a number of extras took the score to 128 before losing the last wicket.

This was yet another very close game against Holyport, played in the right spirit and just a shame that Pinner just couldn't get across the winning line. An excellent, dogged team performance where everyone gave their all, but it just wasn't enough!
