Bamville v Pinner Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 12 Sep 2020 at 1200
Pinner Cricket Club Won by 73 runs
Match report
Pinner 2's completed their 2020 league season with a comprehensive win at Bamville, confirming 2nd place in this Covid affected summer, unbeaten with 5 wins from 5 games.
Skips lost the toss, thus avoiding a difficult decision as the pitch looked good and there were short boundaries, but you can never be sure of how September pitches will actually play. Pinner were invited to bat on a pleasant day in a picturesque little spot near London Colney.
Opening up were Alan Carter (14) and the reliable Simon Pilsbury (36) and they put on 23 before Alan was struck in front of middle. Simon was joined by Jack Tucker (36) and together they put on the largest partnership of the day, taking the score to 99 amid incessant chatter and more fielder moves than you'd get from a chess match! At one stage the over rate dropped below 12 an hour!
Once Simon departed there were a number of small partnerships as batsmen struggled to get in against one of the better attacks we've seen this season, with Omkar Xetenarvencar (14), Sachin Patel (18) and Kunal Choksi (12) all reaching double figures but not going on. The strength in batting again assisted the Lambs as they finished on a competitive 164-9, which included a rare walk to the middle for our favourite number 11 Varun Gopalakrishnan.
After a bring your own picnic in the middle of the park, Pinner took to the field feeling confident, but also recognising 4 an over was not an impossible target. However Varun (1-10) soon made it more difficult with Skips taking a sharp one-handed catch at 2nd slip in the first over. At the other end Jamie Carter (3-23) bowled his best spell in league cricket, bowling quick and getting the ball to nip back appreciably. The highlight of his spell was seeing the middle stump cartwheel towards Kunal, with the batsman still looking for the ball!
Jack (0-20) and Shaunak Deshmukh (0-20) replaced the openers and whilst looking dangerous couldn't find the next wicket. Jack in particular was unlucky as his last over went for 16, with only one blow coming from the middle of the bat. Skips decided an early change was needed and replaced JT and made the breakthrough immediately getting the dangerous opener caught by Darshan Dixit for 30. It then became a procession of ever quieter batsmen walking to the crease as Skips took wickets in each over he bowled, ending with 6-13 off 4.4 overs, assisted by good catches from Lord and Varun, before wrapping up the innings with 2 in 4 balls and Bamville finishing on 90, some 74 runs short.
An unbeaten season for the 2's summed up with good team performances with both bat and ball. The fielding was noticeably better than all our opponents, as 7 run outs showed.
As mentioned in the relatively short debrief, I'd just like to thank all that played in the league games for giving 100% every time we played, and also how individuals have reacted to being dropped or not be selected. A number of yesterday's team had been dropped or not selected and their attitude at training and when they got a chance was exemplary.
Thanks finally to JT for his help and advice at selection and during the games and for the 'old pros' (you know who you are!) who have helped out through the season and let's hope that we can have a similarly successful season next year, but also a full one.
